Conserve water No, we’re not saying you have to adopt an ‘if it’s brown flush it down, if it’s mellow it’s yellow’ policy (unless you really want to) but there are loads of ways of saving water. Whether it’s having a shower instead of a bath, using the ‘Eco’ button on your washer, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or using rainwater for your plants, every little bit adds up.
Composting All that rubbish you so carelessly fling into the bin is pretty useful stuff, y’know? You don’t even have to do anything differently. Just take the kitchen waste you’d usually put in the bin (tea-bags, old veg, coffee ground, etc…) and put into a compost pile to provide your plants with rich nutrients vital for growth. It’s completely environmentally safe as it’ll be going back into nature rather than landfills. Buy recycled products You can get loads of everyday items that are available in recycled form, from mugs to underpants, hats to bikes, and there’s no detriment in quality either. Go local Reduce your carbon footprint and buy locally sourced produce. Aside from the environmental benefits, you’ll also be giving the local economy a boost by supporting your community. Shopping face-to-face is making a comeback…
Recycle, recycle, recycle Make it a habit. Before chucking that tuna can in the bin, think how easy it is to simply change its destiny, from bin-dweller to brand-new bike (or whatever it's new life will hold). Just be kind and rinse them out first….
Don’t litter Probably going to sound a bit like a nagging mum now, but this is literally a criminal offence (up to £2,500...). Plus, let's be fair, it’s not hard to hold onto to that crisp packet for a few more steps to ensure the future of the planet…. Raise your awareness Before you whack on the heating, see if a jumper does the job. Or maybe think of hopping on that bike you've had hidden away for yonks before you step into the car. Becoming a conscious consumer of energy makes you think before performing a task that would usually leave a footprint on the environment. So there you have it. Some small changes here, a few tweeks there, and you’re suddenly an eco-warrior (OK, you’re not quite Swampy, but you’re getting there). If you have any hints or tips on how to become more eco-conscious (the weirder the better) then let us know in the comments section below.
