LED fitting - understanding the ‘light bulb type’ basics

Although there are many different light bulb type fittings, including popular types of light bulb screw bases, there are three main styles of bulb caps typically used in both home and commercial settings

The ‘bayonet’ light bulb type (B)

Bayonet bulbs are the push and twist style light bulb type, denoted by the letter ‘B‘. For example, ‘B15’ and ‘B22’ - the number denotes the diameter or the fitting in millimetres. B15 bulbs are sometimes known as ‘SBC’, which stands for Small Bayonet Cap.

The ‘Edison screw’ light bulb type (E / ES)

Edison screw bulbs are the screw-in style light bulb type, denoted by the letter ‘E’ (sometimes ‘ES’). For example, ‘E14’ and ‘E27’ - again, the number denotes the diameter of the fitting in millimetres. The differences in size are sometimes known as ‘large Edison screw’ and ‘small Edison screw’.

The ‘two pronged’ light bulb type

Two pronged bulbs are the twist and click style light bulb type, denoted by the letters ‘GU’. These bulbs are used for downlighting/spotlight purposes in both home and commercial settings (certain styles are also available for use in outdoor and wet areas).
