Salford City FC face League Two side Hartlepool United tonight live on BBC 1 in the 2nd round of the FA Cup as they aim for their second scalp in the world’s oldest football tournament. The Ammies, who are famously owned by Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Phil and Gary Neville (who recently took the Head Coach role at Spanish giants Valencia), have already knocked out League Two opposition in the form of Notts County.
Repeating that achievement will see them through to the 3rd round, where Premier League opposition enter the fray. Should the non-leaguers triumph tonight, they could end up drawn against neighbours Manchester United in what would be a mouth-watering tie. Hartlepool currently lie 20th in League Two and are ripe for the picking as a dicey relegation battle threatens to distract them from tonight’s tie. Only last season they narrowly avoided dropping down into the conference via an improbable and late run of good form which betrayed early-season premonitions of guaranteed relegation. Already Salford have made history by reaching the 2nd round of the FA Cup for the first time, and have only lost once in their last 10 fixtures. While injury to last season’s top scorer Gareth Seddon threatens to derail the Ammies, struggling Hartlepool also have their own injury concerns with captain Bill Paynter out until February. LEDHut, as proud sponsors of Salford, have decided to celebrate tonight’s forthcoming tie by offering 30% off the
