Salford FC And Manchester United In Monday Night Thriller
Monday night saw Salford City step out in their newkit (sponsored byLED Hut)for the first timeas they faced Manchester United Under-21s for their opening fixture of pre-season. There was more than local pride at stake in this fixture as both sides featured formers players who had appeared for their respective opposition, including former United starlet and Salford striker Danny Webber who had joined the club last year from Accrington. 570 fans flocked to Moor Lane eager to see a game live up to its great potential, and they weren’t let down as they witnessed a hotly contested match between the two Greater Manchester sides. Heavy rain threatened to stall the game, but after a slow start that saw few clear opportunities for either side, the game saw its first goal in the 8th minute. Promising United striker Ashley Fletcher latched onto a through-ball and turned sharply in the area to draw a challenge from Salford captain Chris Lynch. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Fletcher finished the penalty with cool aplomb. From then on, United controlled possession with intricate passing and intelligent movement. Salford continued to hit on the break, however, and even hit the woodwork from a Shelton Payne free-kick. The Reds doubled their advantage in the 37th minute with a deft finish from Weir and went into half-time comfortably in the lead. salford_v_utd_1 After the break, further misery was inflicted on Salford in the 50th minute when Josh Harrop finished with a fine curling effort that looked to confirm victory for United. However, Salford responded quickly by grabbing a goal back in the 54th minute through former United striker Daniel Webber to give the Ammies hope. The scoreline was further reduced to 3-2 in the 71st minute when Matt Chadwick scored to set-up a frantic finale. And, with just 2 minutes to spare, Sam Madeley completed a remarkable come-back with a low-shot to make it 3-3 and earn a deserved draw for the Salfordians.
